Asbestos and Water Damage | Denver and Aurora
The Importance of Water Cleanup and Asbestos Removal
We all know that asbestos was once widely used for its strength, fire-retardant properties, affordability, and more before it was discovered to be carcinogenic. Because of this, asbestos can still be widely found in older buildings and homes. Sometimes you may not even be aware of its potential hazards and at times you may well be wondering about safe means to clean it up.
As the experts in asbestos removal, we at Professional Restoration are well aware of not only the dangers posed by asbestos, but also the importance of safe and thorough asbestos removal from a property.
Hazards of Asbestos
Asbestos is classified as a Known Human Carcinogen because of the damage that small airborne asbestos fibers can cause when inhaled: these fibers can become trapped in the lungs when inhaled.
This leads to scarring, inflammation, and serious health problems including increased the risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma, and several cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, colon, rectum, throat, kidney, gall bladder, and esophagus.
Asbestos only becomes an issue when it’s disturbed. Therefore, water damage repairs that require drywall to be cut and removed, can pose a serious health risk to all those inside the property, making asbestos removal imperative. In 2008, Colorado implemented Regulation 8 Part B with regards to the proper abatement and handling of asbestos containing materials, (ACM).
“Prior to any renovation or demolition which may disturb greater than the trigger levels of material identified as a suspect asbestos-containing material pursuant to the EPA “Green Book”, Managing Asbestos in Place, Appendix G (1990), the facility component(s) to be affected by the renovation or demolition shall be inspected to determine if abatement is required. ” This requires restoration contractors to test for ACM prior to any demo for repairs or renovation.
A Certified Industrial Hygienist must be called out to perform the asbestos testing. Lab reports can be returned quickly, as to not interrupt the construction process, and a non-detect will allow the reconstruction to continue on schedule. If Asbestos if found in the sampling, an asbestos removal contractor must remove the materials properly, or face a large fine for the increased risks to all persons on-site.
